Why Two Nurses?

Paying tribute to the unsung heroes

From the introduction of Florence Nightingale style of nursing in 1868 to developing a professional code of practice  in 1992, the journey of establishing modern day nursing as an independent occupation in Australia has seen trials, tribulations and triumphs.

Despite challenges around pay, validating nurse training in the higher education system and shortages in the workforce,  through the ages our nation’s nurses continue to build therapeutic relationships and execute a holistic approach to care that may often be unseen, but is undisputed by patients and their family.

There are currently over 360,000 nurses in the country honing their craft and continuing to quietly make a different within Australian society everyday. Calm, concise and modest, these caretakers are pillars of strength within the health care system and make up the largest group (63%) of healthcare professionals within Australia [AIHW, 2012].

A family connection

Peerick Vineyard owners Felicity O’Hara and daughter Megan O’Hara are both practicing nurses themselves, lending the inspiration for our name brand name; ‘Two Nurses’. Felicity has been a nurse for over 40 years and Megan, 8 years. With these strong roots in Australia’s noble profession, our family felt it wholly appropriate to pay homage to their colleagues, the country’s humble and quiet heroes, with this premium Viognier.

After all, what better way to kick back and wind down after a stressful shift than with a cool, refreshing glass of white wine that honours your contribution to society.

About Viognier

The Viognier blend (pronounced Vee On Yay) is an illusive white grape variety steeped in French heritage. It’s spiritual home may be France’s Northern Rhône, but after coming close to extinction in the 1960s, Australian producers came to Viognier’s rescue and kept the full-bodied white wine blend alive in the 1980s.

Australia’s diverse climate lends itself well to producing the complex Viognier variety. The second largest variety grown on the Peerick property, Viognier has been planted since the 1990s and yields around 8.5 tonnes of fruit every year. It is distinctive both for its taste and texture; being fragrant, full bodied and rewarding to drink.

Touted as Chardonnay’s natural successor many times, just like the best Aussie Chardys Viognier with its high oak influencer, is a delightful all rounder when it comes to food and wine pairing. Whether enjoyed with rich seafood, African and Asian dishes or a simple post-shift cheese plate, the versatile variety has wide appeal.

Common taste characteristics include apricot, peach, honeysuckle, perfumed scents and high alcohol.

2020 Two Nurses Viognier

Peerick’s Two Nurses Viognier is a rewarding full-bodied white wine that proudly celebrates Australia’s modest achievers. Another Double Gold medal winner it is a worthy successor to Chardonnay. Viognier’s spiritual home is the Rhone Valley in France where Viognier was close to extinction back in the 1960’s. Peerick was part of the movement which gave the variety a new lease of life.

Aged in oak, the Two Nurses blend has a nutty complexity that compliments Viognier’s full bodied peach, apricot, mango, honeysuckle and perfumed scents. A great all rounder with food, our Viognier is an easy-drinking, refreshing tipple that is bursting with character and screams “work hard, play hard” with every delightful glass.
